Estonian Perinatal Society is a scientific organization of health care professionals involved in perinatal care of the mother and newborn infant. The society unites obstetricians, midwives, neonatologists, pediatricians and nurses with the aim to ensure the best quality of pre-, intra- and postnatal care. Estonian Perinatal Society was founded in 1990 and has been an opinion leader in implementing contemporary principles of perinatal medicine in Estonia since then. Today the society has about 150 registered members from all perinatal care related subspecialities and from all 18 maternity wards and units dealing with neonatal care (incl. PICUs) in Estonia.
Estonia is a small country with a population of 1.3 million, about 16,000 births annually and 2 centers (Tallinn as the capital and Tartu as the University Clinic) taking care of high-risk pregnancies. We have high activity and modern quality of peri- and neonatal care, reflected by a 3-fold decrease in perinatal mortality (6,1% in 2008) since regained independency
Today the objectives of our Society are mainly focused on:
- Healthcare quality improvement in perinatal medicine in Estonia: implementation of evidence based decision-making and therapies, exchange of knowledge and experience in the field; close cooperation between subspecialities in order to ensure best outcomes for both, the mother and the neonate;
- Representation of our members at various levels of national and international collaboration, from national administrative deciding bodies to international research organizations;
- Facilitating research initiatives in the field of perinatal medicine by ensuring close cooperation between scientific and clinical bodies all over the country.
The Society achieves these objectives by organizing Conferences, Seminars and other scientific meetings with the involvement of renowned Estonian and international speakers, thus promoting strong collaboration with other national and international scientific societies. The yearly conference of Estonian Perinatal Society has become a well known scientific meeting enamoring numerous non-member specialists from all over the country.
Estonian Perinatal Society is also pointing and supporting workgroups of renowned specialists in order to evolve national guidelines in the field of peri- and neonatal medicine in close collaboration with related professional organizations like Estonian Associations of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, Midwives and Pediatrics. We also work as experts and advisers in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Affairs, Sick Fund and National Drug Agency. We have carried out projects along with Swedish East-European Committee, Swiss Red Cross, Finnish Perinatal Society.
